Find Federal Bureau of Prisons Releases

To find someone released from Federal Bureau of Prisons institutions nationwide, use the federal inmate locator and interpret its status within the BOP system. A Stewart County connection does not make a federal prisoner part of the county jail or Tennessee corrections population. The BOP release record can establish when federal prison custody ended, but it cannot rule out supervised release, parole, another custodian, or a separate case. Match the person carefully, distinguish past dates from future projections, and consult federal court or agency records when the locator does not supply enough detail.

BOP Federal Release Meaning

The Bureau of Prisons locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. Its result can show a name, register number, current age, race, sex, release date, and location. When a past release date appears with Released and no institution, BOP says the person was released on that date and is no longer in BOP custody. That is a precise but limited conclusion.

A released federal prisoner may still be on supervised release, federal parole in an applicable case, or held by another correctional or criminal-justice system. Supervised release is a court-ordered term in the community after imprisonment. The federal judgment and docket explain that term. A BOP result should therefore be described as “released from BOP custody,” never as proof that every custody or supervision obligation ended.

Search BOP Release Records

The strongest match uses a federal identifier. BOP accepts a BOP register number and can also search DCDC, FBI, or INS numbers. A name search permits optional race, age, and sex filters. Search variations when names have changed or contain punctuation, then compare every displayed identifier before relying on the date.

  1. Open the official BOP inmate locator.
  2. Use the register number when known, or enter the full committed name.
  3. Apply the optional age, race, and sex fields only to narrow a common name.
  4. Compare the register number and identity details on the result.
  5. Read location and release date together. A past date plus Released has different force from a future date.
  6. Check the federal judgment and supervised-release order when the post-prison status matters.
Scope: A BOP release is departure from BOP custody. It does not establish the absence of another agency's custody or court supervision.

Stewart Federal Custody Route

Stewart County belongs to the Middle District of Tennessee. A federal defendant can be held under a court order in a federal, state, local, or private bed managed through the U.S. Marshals Service. USMS handles prisoners from court-ordered custody through acquittal or conviction and delivery to BOP. During that stage, the BOP locator may have no useful result because the person has not entered BOP custody.

Disappearance from the Stewart County jail roster can mean a federal transport. It is not proof of community release. Check the county transfer record, the federal docket for detention or release orders, the actual detention facility, and the Middle District office. If conviction leads to BOP delivery, switch to the BOP locator. This sequence connects the systems without calling a national BOP institution a physical Stewart County facility.

Federal Dates Can Change

A future BOP date is projected. Sentence recalculation, including applicable First Step Act credits, can change it. Court orders and other sentence actions can also affect what the locator displays. Do not turn a future date into a promise about the day or hour a person will leave. VINELink's Tennessee county and TDOC layers do not replace this federal channel.

A past date paired with Released is stronger because BOP defines it as the end of its custody. Even then, compare the identity and date with the judgment. If the person moved to another sovereign, the BOP exit and the new custody can both be true. Record the agency scope in any note made for personal knowledge, a court matter, or reconnecting with the person.

Projected date
A calculated future date subject to later change.
Actual BOP release
A past locator date paired with BOP's Released status.
Supervised release
A federal court term in the community after incarceration.
Transfer
Movement between custodians rather than release to the community.

Older Federal Release Files

The public BOP locator begins with federal inmates from 1982. For earlier federal custody, use the National Archives. Supply the person's name, approximate birth date or age, race, and approximate institution dates. Those details help locate an older file when modern register information is unavailable.

For a more detailed BOP record, use the agency's records process and follow its identity or authorization requirements. Ask for an existing record with a defined date range and subject. The public locator is a lead and a status statement, while the agency file and federal judgment can document the sentence and release more fully. Access exemptions and redaction may apply.

BOP official Released status and federal custody caveats

That official explanation is why the correct conclusion is release from BOP custody, with other custody or supervision checked separately.

BOP and Other Locators

BOP does not cover an ordinary Stewart County booking, a TDOC prison sentence, current ICE detention, or a person only in USMS pretrial custody. Use the sheriff record for the county booking. Use FOIL for Tennessee felony custody and supervision. Use ICE's locator for its adult current and recent-release population. Use federal court and USMS channels before BOP delivery.

Absence from BOP means little when the case never entered federal prison custody. A reliable conclusion identifies the matching source and its limit. The Stewart County release search lays out the local and state path for people whose cases do not belong in the BOP network.

Federal Release Record Chain

Preserve the BOP result with the search date because public fields can update. Then obtain the federal judgment and any supervised-release order if the post-prison terms are relevant. For a Stewart jail departure into federal hands, retain the county transfer record and the federal detention or release order. Each document answers one part of the movement.

A court release order may come before physical processing. A BOP date may state the end of BOP custody without saying where the person went. A USMS transport can happen with no public locator result. Keeping those facts separate prevents the common error of turning movement between agencies into a community release.

Federal Judgment After BOP Release

The locator cannot explain the full sentence by itself. The federal judgment states the prison term and any supervised-release term imposed by the court. It may also contain conditions that begin after imprisonment. Compare that judgment with later docket orders because appellate action, sentence modification, revocation, or another court event can alter the path. The locator's past Released date remains proof only of the end of BOP custody reported there.

Federal supervised release is not the same as Tennessee parole or probation. It is a federal court term administered after prison under federal authority. A person can therefore appear as Released in BOP while still subject to a court term in the community. When the question is whether imprisonment ended, cite BOP. When the question is what follows, consult the judgment and the federal court record.

A revocation can return a person to custody after an earlier release. In that event, an older release date remains historically accurate but no longer answers current custody. Search the locator again, review the new docket activity, and note the date of each source. This prevents an old BOP result from being treated as a permanent current-status certificate.

BOP Identity Match Safeguards

The register number is the most direct public match because names can repeat and change. BOP's optional demographic fields help narrow a name search, but each result still needs a full comparison. Age is current age in the display, not necessarily age at conviction or release. A facility name reports BOP location at the time represented. It should not be confused with the federal court district or the county where the case began.

When only a name is known, try the committed name and well-supported variations. Do not force a match because Stewart County appears in a related court file. Record the register number from the correct result and use it in a focused agency request. For a pre-1982 record, give the National Archives an approximate birth or age, race, and likely institution dates because the modern locator's coverage begins later.

The BOP public result does not cover USMS pretrial detention. It also does not search civil ICE custody. A former Tennessee state prisoner belongs in FOIL, while a county detainee belongs in the Stewart sheriff's records. The custody type should be resolved before a missing federal result is interpreted.
